Revel POS 101: Our New Kitchen Display System Helps You Handle the Heat

by Revel

October 14, 2016

There’s no time to waste in a fast-paced restaurant environment. Every second is crucial, whether it’s spent taking orders, preparing dishes, delivering good customer service, or maintaining inventory. When the kitchen heats up during peak hours, there’s no room for error. To maintain efficiency, it’s important to organize how orders are taken and how they’re delivered to the kitchen.

Traditionally, orders were handwritten tickets placed in a row for the kitchen staff, which eventually were speared onto a spindle upon completion. While this simple method has been effective in the past, this leave a large margin for human error. Sloppy handwriting alone could ruin an entire order!

With the updates to the Revel Kitchen Display System (KDS) in our most recent 2.19 build, syncing the kitchen and front of house is easier than ever.

kitchen display system

Like the Revel POS, the KDS provides users an easy to use digital kitchen management system. The KDS shows orders sent from the POS rather than printing a physical ticket. This eliminates the accidental loss or destruction of a paper ticket and saves money on costly kitchen printers and receipt paper. Just like kitchen printers, multiple kitchen displays can be utilized and easily configured on the management console so specific products appear on each screen. The KDS also allows users to design specific kitchen flows so that order items can be pushed from one KDS to another and appear on the appropriate station.

The Revel KDS app boasts several effective display styles to suit an establishment’s needs. For simple organization in a fast-paced kitchen, the KDS can be set to Tile View. To provide a more robust interface, Revel has developed “Tile Kitchen View.” This new display style maximizes screen real estate by allowing tiles to continue into the next column, ensuring the correct products are associated with the correct order. For enhanced organization the tiles are now color coordinated based on dining option. Orders designated as “eat in” or “in restaurant” appear in grey, while the “to go” dining option is displayed in blue.

In busy kitchens with several chefs and wait staff, tracking which items have been started is key to time efficiency. Tile Kitchen View’s new interactive capabilities allows users utilizing the “in progress” feature to tap dishes that are currently “in progress” which changes the status to “complete.” After the various dishes have been delivered to the table, servers or kitchen staff can tap the completed items to remove them from the KDS. During peak hours, this allows multiple kitchen staff users to manage which dishes are being prepared so that meals are completed on time.

With Revel’s KDS, you can improve workflow and maximize efficiency turn to keep the back of house running smoothly and boost customer loyalty. The KDS is a perfect kitchen complement to the Revel POS providing a more effective restaurant journey, from submitting the customer’s order on the POS to delivering their dishes to the table.

For more information on the 2.19 update to the KDS and more new features, check out the release notes here.

An Ethernet Cable for the Apple iPad?

A new connection has emerged that will change the way point of sale systems operate on a network. Revel Systems has developed an Ethernet cable connection that links the Apple iPad to a network via a wired connection. This exciting development is called the Revel Ethernet Connect.

revel ethernet connect

So, why the wired connection?
The Revel Ethernet Connect was created as an alternative option to a wireless connection for a couple reasons:

• To give customers a reliable connection to their network
• To heighten security measures
• To speed up installation of new customers

Improving the customer experience is at the forefront of the Ethernet cable addition. Attached to the Apple iPad, the Ethernet cabled solution is vastly more reliable than a basic WiFi network. WiFi networks that are not properly setup and/or managed can contain potential security threats, causing breaches. A wired Ethernet connection is also the fastest way to process high volume transactions. There are no POS transaction delays with the Revel Ethernet Connect, meaning no slowdown for transactions and long lines.

The Revel Ethernet Connect is available for sale, call or email with questions.

Do you manage or own a table service restaurant? Do you wish there was an easier way to view and navigate the chaos that comes with a packed house? Don’t worry, Revel’s got your back.

For our table service customers, Revel has enhanced the iPad Point of Sale table layout screen to increase efficiency and ease of use. The figure below displays the previous button layout from old versions:

POS Sales marketing Leads Social Cash

Figure 1. Button Layout from Older Versions

Kind of a mess right? We agree, so we changed it. Use the table (excuse the pun) below as your guide to all those pesky icons in Figure 1.

A. Table timers button
B. Button to switch to list view format
C. Reservations button
D. Reservations capacity report (removed in 2.13)
E. New (Quick) order button
F. Transfer order button
G. Move order button
H. Open Tab/ Bar Tabs  button

Figure 2 displays the new and improved layout. The “Tables”, “Bar Tabs”, “Waitlist”, “Reservations” “List View”, and “New Order” option buttons have been moved to the top of the screen and have been labeled with their respective functions. That way you know exactly what each button does.

The “Table Timers” (A) button has been removed. If the “Table Timers” option has been enabled in the Management Console, timers will automatically appear below each table that is in use. Long-tap a table to use the “View Timer Details” option, along with the “Move Order” and “Transfer Order” functions, as shown in Figure 2.

A “Go to Order” button has been added to the Waitlist History screen, shown in Figure 3 below. The button appears when users tap a row. If the party has been removed from the waitlist (not seated) then the “Go to Order” button will not be present. This button helps to make recently seated tables accessible from the Waitlist History screen.

On the table list view screen, the “+ New Order” button has been added for available tables. Tapping a row with an available table will display the button in that row, as shown in Figure 4. Tapping this button will bring up an empty order, that will be linked to the selected table.

On the tables screen, a notification has been added to tables with multiple orders/bills. If more than one order is on a table, that table is shown as two tables, slightly offset. In previous versions, upon tapping a table with multiple orders, a notification would appear indicating how many orders were tied to that table. Now, that notification appears automatically, shown in Figure 5 below, without requiring the user to tap on the table.  We’ve also added clearer outlines to tables with more than one order that is in a held, active, or paid states. Manage your restaurant’s rush easily and efficiently with the new table layout screen.

How To Choose Your Perfect POS System

How To Choose Your Perfect POS System

One of the keys to succeeding in the restaurant industry is being sure to manage your budget. You may have a great menu and space, but if you do not maintain a strict budget, your restaurant may still fail. To help maintain this budget, and perform many important business functions, it is imperative that you put in place a capable Point of Sale system.

Over the last few years, POS systems have truly advanced from the times when they just processed payments. In fact, many new POS platforms offer sales and inventory reports, customer databases, employee timesheets, and marketing functions.

With so many options out there, you may be confused as to which POS system will be right for your business. Whether you are opening you first location or your tenth, we are here to help guide you through the options and find a system that will help enhance your performance.

Why Do I Need POS System?

Investing in a good POS system right from the beginning can help save your restaurant money in the long run and benefit your restaurant operation in many ways. The platform will keep payment processing secure, cut down on ordering times by assigning prices to all menu items, clock your employees in and out, and notify you when an employee will surpass 40 hours per week.

In addition, many POS systems offer detailed revenue and inventory reporting features. These reports can be crucial by not only finding out profit margins per dish and overall, but also can help ensure that you do not run out of a popular menu item, which could cause you unexpected revenue losses.

Which POS System is Ideal for Your Restaurant?

Answering this question depends mostly on your current business objectives. If you are opening a small coffee shop, you will not have the same needs as a sports bar owner with multiple locations.

Objective: Save Money Upfront

For those businesses that are looking to save money up-front, a basic POS system may be the perfect fit. Most entry level POS systems include some reporting options and the transaction security that you want from a POS system, but no unnecessary features (like multiple POS stations).

Objective: Perform Complex Transactions

If you’re looking for a POS system that performs complex restaurant transactions such as merging or splitting checks, make sure to research the POS systems in-depth. Many companies claim to offer certain features while offering only watered-down versions. Be sure to consider how easy a system is to use as well. It doesn’t matter how many features a system has if they take too long to operate. Servers need a powerful yet intuitive POS system to be successful.

Objective: Serve a Fluctuating Customer Base

Your POS system should never be a burden to your restaurant. Long-term contracts are a nuisance for restaurants looking to expand or locations that operate seasonally. Restaurants shouldn’t have to pay for terminals that aren’t used for half of the year, or be charged to alter a contract due to sudden growth and expansion. Owners should investigate before signing with a POS provider, as some allow restaurants to seamlessly switch the amount of terminals while only paying for what is in use.

Objective: Manage High Sales Volume

Do you already operate a large or busy restaurant? If so, then you should have multiple POS terminals with functions that facilitate efficient service. The ability to pre-authorize credit cards and order online are two features that help process orders quickly and easily. By choosing a POS system that decreases ticket times, restaurant owners can serve more customers and make more money.

Free Trial

If you are still feeling uncertain about which POS system is right for you, or if you think you have found the perfect fit, be sure to try the system out before pulling the trigger. Virtually every POS system on the market offers a free trial, ranging from one week to one month. Most don’t require a credit card which means they are a completely risk free option to fully experience the system before choosing to run your business on it.

Customer Support

A good POS system shouldn’t need much support. However if something goes awry, you want to make sure that your POS system has excellent customer care – and answers the moment you need help. Look for a POS system that offers 24/7 customer care, so if your POS system malfunctions during a late night happy hour, you don’t miss out on revenue.

4 Reasons To Deploy A Cloud-based POS System

We’ve been hearing so much about what cloud computing is and how it works – what we don’t hear a lot about is the bottom-line benefits that it can provide to retailers and restaurateurs.

Deploying a cloud-based POS solution has many business benefits; from robust business intelligence, to intuitive tools useful for managing employees, vendors and inventory. Integrating a cloud-based POS solution can help streamline operations, maximize profitability, and control losses.

Below, find the top four reasons retail and restaurant merchants should deploy a cloud-based POS:

  1. Real-time Access

POS solutions that are strictly software based are extremely effective for managing a business while a merchant is on location, however how can the merchant be sure their business is running at maximum efficiency when they are not present and/or have more than 1 location they need visibility into? A cloud-based POS system allows a merchant to manage their business anytime, anywhere they have internet access.  Intuitive management features essential to running a business efficiently are now at their fingertips:

Real-time business data monitoring for one or multiple locations

View daily, weekly, monthly sales and transaction history

Track best-selling items, services and monitor inventory

Detailed sales report by period, store or item

Manage employee schedules (hourly, commissioned and salaried)

Facilitate payroll and commission calculations

View clock in/out status

Track sales records by employee and customize employee security levels

  1. Enhanced Security

Cloud-based POS software integrated with POS hardware uses an internet infrastructure to access data via a remote server. In other words, the data stored in your POS system can be automatically backed up and synced, making it easier to protect and update information. A reputable provider will have a PCI compliant server with backup data centers to ensure uptime and recovery.

The merchant should also set up protocols on their local network to ensure data security.  This can all be done without having staff to manage security which is especially important for small businesses that do not have the resources for an in-house staff.

  1. Hardware/Software Extendibility

Cloud-based POS solutions also safeguard the merchant’s investment. Merchants can continue to utilize their POS software without the worry that their hardware and or software will quickly become obsolete.  Software upgrades are conveniently pushed to merchants with little effort on the part of the merchant and with little to no upgrade fees.

  1. Digital Marketing Tools

More often than not, merchants do not have the time or staff to create or customize promotions or programs to drive more traffic to their location. Cloud-based POS solutions provide access to digital marketing tools that can help stimulate additional revenue for merchants. Merchants can quickly and cost effectively create and customize promotions via email to existing and prospective customers.

Loyalty and Reward Programs

Create cross sell and up sell opportunities

Personalize offers by customer profile

e-Coupons and E-Promotions – Bundle services to create customer packages and offers

NCR Silver Entry Level POS
Has your business become big enough that manually tracking your inventory…and your sales…and your customer base has become overwhelming and too time consuming? Have you started to do some research into a point of sale solution and had sticker shock?
NCR Silver computer POS
NCR (National Cash Register), the “original” cash register company, has come out with a simplified, entry level point of sale solution called NCR Silver. It provides a straightforward solution for tracking sales, profitability and your customers, with the capability of being portable.Be forewarned, this is a very simplified system, if you are looking for a point of sale that can produce super-specific and uber-customized reports, this one is not for you. However, if you are in the market for an entry level, easy to use point of sale system which can streamline your inventory process, tracking and marketing to your customer base, and allows you to sell to those customers from anywhere…this is your POS solution!

What can NCR Silver do?

NCR Silver advertises the three following areas as the main draw of their POS system:

  1. Tracking Sales

NCR Silver is the easy solution for keeping track of your back-office, no matter where you are. NCR Silver delivers actionable and relevant data that tells you exactly what you need to know to keep your small business running.

NCR lets you manage your inventory, track sales and track your profitability with real-time reporting tools available in the back office. You can easily input and track discounts, you can enter in specific tax rates on different items, manage returns, and so much more!

  2. Market to Customers

Email marketing has never been this simple. Capture your customer emails and let NCR Silver do the rest. NCR Silver has integrated marketing tools that help you reach your customers in relevant ways that will grow your relationships and grow your small business.

NCR Silver has integrated email marketing, allowing you to capture customer data, email digital receipts, and compile their purchase history. Why do you want this functionality? Because it’s awesome!

Here is an example, Judy comes to your store and makes a purchase with her credit card, she also opts to give you her email and customer information. Since she used a credit card, her email is now linked to that card, and every time she comes in and uses the same card, NCR Silver will link the new purchase to her existing contact information. Cool right?! No more asking for phone numbers every time someone checks out!

Let’s say it’s been 30 days since the last time Judy came into your store and purchased something. NCR Silver will automatically send out an email, using a template you have created, reminding her to come in and see you. You can also create customer groups, which allow you to send out specific emails and/or coupons with specific promotions.

  3. Sell Anywhere

Go ahead and move around. Sell to your customers, wherever and whenever you want with NCR Silver. No matter where your small business takes you, NCR Silver will go to.

As long as there is a wireless or a 3G connection, you can use NCR Silver on the go. Ever want the ability to process transactions and track your sales from a trade show? Now you can. NCR Silver has the ability to run not only on the iPad, but an iPhone or iPod Touch as well. You can take payments via credit card (with an additional reader), cash, or check and have the ability to track what inventory was sold and who bought it IN REAL TIME!

What is the best part about NCR Silver?

HANDS DOWN…the back office functionality!

As I said before, this is a simplified entry-level POS system…so if you are coming from tracking everything manually…this thing is SWEET!!!

My Store

When you log into the back office, the first place you go is My Store. Here you will see four different reports: Last 7 Days Performance, Snapshot, Good to Know, and Last 6 Week Trend. These reports are in the form of graphs and can be clicked on to reveal more detailed information in the Snapshot window.

My favorite is the Good to Know activity. This will tell you information that is, well, good to know. Such as days with higher sales than usual, higher than usual amount of item price overrides, higher than usual discounts, higher than normal voids, and things of that nature. These things are help you keep an eye on your business without spending a lot of time analyzing all of your reports.

Results

The Results tab is the next in the NCR Silver back office. Here you will be able to track your sales, profits, and transactions in reports customizable by today, the last 7 days, or the last 30 days. You can break down the reporting into categories you create. It even allows you to make a report that tracks your business by the hour!

Inventory

The Inventory tab is where you will enter in your categories and items, and manage your modifiers and discounts. You can sort your items by category, or view all at the same time. NCR Silver allows you to enter information, and therefore track the information, on your items such as category, vendor, retail price, your cost, and the margin you make on that item. NCR Silver allows you to set different tax categories for individual items as well, making it easier to collect the exact amount of tax necessary for each item, eliminating the time consuming process of calculating tax.

Customers

This. Is. Awesome. NCR Silver helps you to track your customers, allow you to see what they purchase and how often, as well as send out email marketing campaigns. It is an awesome marketing tool! And it’s included!!!

The first section is the Customer Dashboard. This shows you a report of your Top 10 Customers, how many times they visited in the last six months, when their last visit was, and how much money they have spent in your store in the last 6 months. There is also a report of your previous email campaigns and a report of the offers that were redeemed.

The second section is the Customers Tab. Here you have a list of all your customers, the customer category you put them into, their phone number and their email.

The third section is your Email Marketing Tab…which is my favorite. Here you create and manage your email campaigns and recurring emails. Send your customers Welcome emails and Miss You emails to bring them back in. Here you can find tips on how to create powerful promotions, protecting your business, and creating appealing subject lines. It helps you increase your social sharing reach. And helps you track and react to your performance by evaluating your email campaign’s effectiveness.

Settings

Here is where you have access to and ability to change the information for your store. You can manage what shows on your receipts, the different tax categories you need, and your accepted payment methods. NCR Silver also allows you to keep track of your employees and what they have access to. And finally, you can add in your Social Media links to Facebook and Twitter. There is also a way to auto-post your bulk email campaigns to Facebook as well.

Conclusion

NCR Silver Point of Sale+
The NCR Silver can use a cash drawer, scanner, and receipt printer operating similarly to a standard full POS system. The encrypted card reader ensures you are PCI compliant by encrypting the card holder data right at the swipe, thus eliminating your liability should your system be breached or hacked. NCR Silver is able to run all of the basic reports you would get out of a standard full POS system.

What can’t it do? At this time, NCR Silver cannot link multiple locations, track shared inventory, or make crazy specific reports. So if you have three store locations and they all share a warehouse and you need a report that tells you which store sells the most widgets in purple chevron pattern, you really do need a full POS system (which BNG Technologies would be happy to talk to you about).

Lastly, you never pay for a software upgrade with NCR Silver. Each month you pay a low subscription fee, giving you access to live support and free software upgrades as long as you are a member. The hardware is an upfront purchase, costing approximately 10% of what you would spend on a full countertop POS station. We do have leasing options available for those who need it, however the upfront cost is very low. The value is AMAZING!!
